Waaaaaay back when, a long long time ago in December when I started this blog I wrote a post about a cookbook I had picked up at the suggestion of my friend Caryn. I ADORE macrobiotic eating. I don't know what is about whole grains and copious amounts of cooked leafy greens that make me drool.
We do have a couple of restaurants that cater to the veggie-type but they are nowhere near me and their menus don't do it for me the way the Fresh menu does. But I don't live in Toronto so what's a girl to do??
Every time I pick up the Refresh cookbook from Fresh Restaurants in Toronto I am entirely relieved to discover anew that I can make their tantalizing menu dishes myself! Not only does this cookbook allow me to prepare the dishes I crave but can't find in Montreal (pssst - Fresh - ever considered franchising here? I know the whole French thing is a real pain but I promise to frequently patronize your establishment, especially if you set it up not far from me in Monkland village...) but it makes it all seem so easy, so long as I have prepared a proper ingredients list.
I am planning on setting my garden up this summer around the staples in this book, including swiss chard (was DROWNING in it last summer. Lesson learned), parsley, kale, and the neighbours always have lots of zucchini that grows through the fence dividing our yard...
My favourite dish is, as you can tell by my title reference, the Green Goddess Rice Bowl found on page 70. The Tahini Sauce and Simple Sauce bring the entire mix together BEAUTIFULLY. I also had bigtime success with the Khao San Soba dish, despite my lack of a functional blender.
This book is completely vegan, which normally doesn't appeal to me as I don't like the idea of substitutions so I do avoid the baking recipes in the back, but there a huge range of menu ideas to appeal to anyone who wants to get a little fresher when it comes to eating!
Okay, now I'm drooling. My husband and I are leaving the kids with a babysitter and going to see a movie tonight so I won't be doing much food prep, but I know what we're having for dinner tomorrow night.
And guess what? The good people over at Fresh restaurants have generously sent me THREE cookbooks to offer up to you, my faithful readers! So you can be Green Goddesses (or Gods? Any men reading my blog?) too!!
Here's how to WIN. Each point will give you one entry, unless otherwise stated:
1. Retweet my blog post, being sure to mention @AppleCheeksDipe and @freshtweeets. 1 entry per tweet, 1 tweet per hour.
2. Comment on my blog with your favourite leafy green. Extra entries if you have a recipe to share! 1 extra entry per recipe, and please share the recipe in your comment for everyone to enjoy!
3. Visit the Fresh Restaurants website and tell me what you you would order if you went there for lunch.
4. If you live in Toronto and are a regular Fresh Restaurants patron, give yourself an extra entry.
5. Reblog my giveaway!
6. Follow my blog!
This contest will close on Friday, April 9, at midnight DST (EST). Three winners will be chosen at random using random.org.
Good luck and happy eating!!
I keep having these WHOAH moments and they're becoming more frequent as this pregnancy progresses.
There is another human being, fully apart from myself, who I know NOTHING about past what I've seen on one ultrasound, inhabiting my body. Like, living IN my body, making use of my resources, and inspiring all sorts of unappealing transitions.
I blame technology for the sense of disconnect. It can do everything else for me but I still have to do the primitive, child-bearing thing if I want to pass along my legacy.
And I love every second of it.
You can always count on AppleCheeks™ to bring the sexy back to cloth diapering, can't you? And our new Little Bundle packaging is no exception!
When we first launched we'd offered the Little Bundle as a retail package but not officially, just as a suggestion to our retailers. Now we are thrilled to announce our new packaging option! Each Little Bundle contains one AppleCheeks™ Envelope Cover and one super absorbent bamboo insert.
I'm SO impressed with myself so just had to share. This is my first proper set of cornrows. It's looking a little fuzzy because it's the morning after (camera had performance anxiety the night before) and because I think i accidentally cut her hair when I was taking the last set of elastics out, but still...Look what I did:
The concept of reusable diaper has certainly taken off in the last few years. I'm an avid Twitterer and sometimes I'm just completely shocked by the amount of choice out there and the fact that so many people think that the market is so ripe! At AppleCheeks™ we are in FULL agreement that the world has never been so ready to make the transition.
Not everyone agrees, of course, and there are still plenty of parents out there that wrinkle their noses in disgust at the very thought of cloth (we're working on them, don't worry!).
But washable swim diapers are in a league of their own. They just make sense and they make sense to everyone!
Throwaway swim diapers are a costly and unnecessary expense. For the price of one pack of diapers, which will last you all of 16 or so swims, you can get your hands on a MUCH cuter and more effective washable version with an indefinite lifetime! This one truly is a no-brainer.
So this is why we are announcing the launch of our very own Washable Swim Diaper!
Our diaper is the softest diaper on the market, and as we know you LOVE the styling of our Envelope Cover, we've translated the design to a product that really works!
Two layers of 100% polyester Canadian-milled mesh allows water to comfortably move through the diaper while keeping any solids, should they occur at an inopportune time, out of the pool. Our diaper is completely designed and manufactured right here in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, just like the rest of our AppleCheeks™ line.
And our signature two-size system with a snap at the waist and an separately adjustable snap at the thigh means your little one is guaranteed a comfortable, long-last fit. Size 1 fits approximately 7lbs - 20lbs and size 2 fits approximately 18lbs to 40lbs.
AppleCheeks™ Washable Swim Diapers will be available to order from your local AppleCheeks™ retailer in early April!
I'm a sucker for professional photo sessions. I really couldn't care less what I look like and would be happy to stay out of them myself, but my kids are just so darn cute that I feel I can't do them justice on my own with my little point-and-shoot. Maybe it's time to start looking at fancier cameras...all the other blogging mamas have them!
Anyways, we've had some great sessions in the last few years with a few different local photographers, a couple being for commercial purposes. I've got some AMAZING shots of the kids up and around the house and I don't think I'll ever get tired of looking at them.
Recently, in response to a Facebook posting about something pregnancy-related I was encouraged to do a pregnancy session. Now, remember, I REALLY do not like what this third pregnancy is doing to my body. It's not handling it as well as it did the first two. I have the water retention and let's not even talk about the state of my rear end. I've NEVER EVER in my life gained weight in my legs or thighs and suddenly they look like they belong to someone else. And the one thing I truly cannot stand is the loss of my already barely-noticeable jawline, which happened way early on. Those 28lbs had to go somewhere, I guess. I just wish they'd stayed off my face...
So I didn't hold out much hope for the photo session we did with Shoshana Ruttner a couple of weeks back. I mean, no matter how good the photographer or their equipment is, it's kind of all about the subject matter, no? On top of my jiggliness, Azure decided, as she often does when asked to perform, to be at her most uncooperative. And Phoenix, normally the world's most accommodating 2 1/2 year old, woke up WAY too early that morning so was desperately ready for a nap by 10am when were just getting started. Lovely combo. Let's just say there was a lot of threatening and bribing involved in this shoot.
But look! If you pretend that I have a chin and tone down the blush I didn't realize was on so thickly (do I need glasses?) then I actually look not so bad for 29 weeks pregnant!
This is a good angle. My belly is kind of spilling into my lap, but one could imagine that I have a chin, and THAT is what really counts!
By the way, Shoshana also did the amazing photo session that resulted in the photo of Phoenix I use as my profile pic (look to your right, top of the page, second column of this blog). And she is also responsible for what I think is the best picture of anyone in the history picture taking, the one of Phoenix I used to open this entry.
Shoshana also has a Facebook fan page and often has all kinds of neat deals listed on it.
Thank you so much, Shoshana, for your patience with my kids and for your creativity! I'm so looking forward to our newborn session when Baby X has safely made it out of my body!
